while there are nefarious individuals on the net (in general) and twitter (in particular) one thing i thought about a lot before getting genesis rocket is how it HAS to work. it HAS to work because if it didn't, if it toppled under its' own weight, it would affect all of its' users and especially its' affiliates. rumors travel fast on twitter -- the story of michael jackson's death broke on twitter before major news engines published any confirmations, and the search traffic was so heavy that google assumed there was a spam attack and blocked all "michael jackson" search queries. if someone did build a twitter doomsday device like in your scenario, it wouldn't be long after it started hijacking accounts before the author was shut down, and i'm guessing some scorned user would make a vigilant watchdog. because of the massive volunteer police force on twitter, nothing that would *actually* qualify as a scam (and quite a few things that aren't or ride the border) can last very long because people love to gossip about stuff like that, which would damage the integrity of the script. and i think just because your product was free, doesn't necessarily mean it would be safe from smear campaigns. once you started doing bad things with it, people would start noticing. sure it would take down a lot of accounts with it, and it wouldn't be the affected users that would do the catching (not at first anyway) but people have gotten pretty good at figuring out how to take and post screenshots of twitter pages to record particularly memorable tweets, and that would provide proof that the spam-o-matic was doing the dirty work.

it's an amusing hypothetical scenario, but anything that works like that would have a limited life span. and my guess is that after making a successful (albeit free) product, the author would find more value trying to monetize the list of users he's just acquired -- through offering premium services, or a mailing list, or something -- than sabotaging it by just maliciously shutting down twitter accounts he doesn't like.

One question - where do I get my hands on an underdogblogger guitar?!?

I think your line regarding the Robbie Williams lifestyle really sums it up. I mean if you want to live comfortable and play music - put a donation link up on your music site and let the fans decide how much you deserve! lol

Great post. The part about people being scared of the immediate feedback is absolutely true.

Write good music and it will go everywhere. But only if you let it be heard.

quite right Chris. I have no problem with the technical side of things - I write code for a living and such, but this blog originally set out to explore how to make money online with free resources. I've abandoned that theme now and I don't post much here anymore, but for what it is, and the traffic it gets, it just isn't worth the domain name fees to me..... :)
