Give It Away Now

(or where I ask chili peppers style “How come everybody wants to keep it like the kaiser?”)

(double aside today – this is a longish post and if you don’t read it far enough down to get to the crux – here it is – Give some money to charity! Now, read the post!)

So, I think most of you reading this are either making money online, or trying to make money online…..for different reasons: Upstart Blogger is putting his earnings away to ensure his families’ financial security, The At Home Couple are sick of working for someone else and don’t want to waste their lives for a “shitty pension and a cheap gold watch” …..ClogMoney just wants the fame, fortune and groupies that come from celebrity blogging. Normal Joe blogs because he want’s to work for himself and ensure his financial freedom….Wordvixen wants to be a professional freelance writer….BrilliantJeni actually makes full time income online.  Griz also makes a lot of cash with his make money online for beginners blog (in fact, Griz is my inspiration when it comes to using free resources to make money online).   I’m doing it because with rising prices, I need some extra money to help cover the cost of childcare; my day job just doesn’t pay enough after my mortgage, energy bills and food.

Anyway, I know we all want the money; most of us want to be filthy rich. And, of course, the economic crisis is in the forefront of everyone’s minds lately.  We are all worried about money. Here’s something to put it in perspective though; I’ve seen various different versions of the stats (some higher, some lower), but they all go something like this:

If you have a roof over your head, keep your clothes in a closet and your food in a refrigerator, you are wealthier than 75% of the world’s population. Furthermore, if you actually have a bank account, then you are in the wealthiest 8% of the world’s population. Re-read that.  You are wealthier than 92% of the world.

Christmas is just around the corner and I’m wealthier than 92% of the world…..so are you…..I know I could use every extra penny this year, especially at this time of the year, when our rampant consumerism seems to take over and we are cajoled, coaxed and manipulated into purchasing a shitload of stuff that we probably don’t need.

I’m not making a truckload online yet….currently I make between 50cents and 1 dollar a day online from adsense on a different blog. Not a lot of money – at most, $30 a month. Still that 30 bucks will send my child to nursery for a half a day….hmmm probably less than half a day…..not the point – Here’s the rub (and I’m sure I’m not the first person to think of doing this) – I’m going to donate everything I earn online in October and November to charity (that’s going to come somewhere between 30 and 60 dollars for 2 months). And I’m challenging every blogger who is making money online to match me (or if you earn less than I do, to pledge the 2 months of online income). Think about it – a lot of you make considerably more than 30 dollars a month online….many of you are making in excess of 100 dollars a day from your online ventures, so matching my charity contributions is going to cost some of you less than a day’s worth of income. I know you may be counting on that day’s income, and I feel you – like I said, I need the cash for childcare….this little shindig is going to send me further into debt, but that really is not the point – it will be temporary – it will hurt a little now, but I (and you) will still be wealthier than 92% of the world next year, and we will all make more cash.

If every blogger who makes money online gives the same amount as I do to a charity of their choice, we can make a huge impact. I don’t care who you chose to support, just give a little back, that’s all. My personal charity of choice happens to be Care for the Wild – ’cause I like wildlife, but maybe you want to give to Cancer research, or World Vision. It doesn’t matter.

So what’s the plan? Post something on your blog – challenge all your MMO readers to give it away! I don’t care if you link me up or not – I’m not all that interested in cheap traffic tricks, but the opportunity for this to spread to every MMO blogger virally is huge. Make a post about it. Pledge your cash.  I’m going to link up every blog that I find who posts the challenge to their readers. Can’t say fairer than that. Oh, and if you thought of the idea before me – hit me up and I’ll link you up.

Edit……I’ve set up a page for everyone who is involved in some sort of giving it away.  Go check them out on Charity starts online.

I like what you are trying to do here so I think I will pass the word along to others. Good luck.

Hey Adam – nice one – thanks! Good karma coming your way for sure.
I’ll be back at your blog – love your domain name btw :)

Hey- Thanks for the shout out! And don’t forget, my other aspiration is to rule the world. Just for a day or so, then I’ll give it back. Pinky swear.

I think that’s awesome what you’re doing, and I’ll probably post on it soon. Hubs and I agreed that this Christmas won’t be big- one or two small-ish gifts only per family member. What I *am* doing, however, is buying conscientiously. I’m not buying from Wal-mart or other big box stores that only support imported goods. I’m buying from small, micro, and indie businesses. A gourmet tea pack for my mother (purchased through a friend’s affiliate link- thereby making them money), a hand carved pen for my brother- purchased through Etsy, lovely handmade lip balm and soap for friends, sis-in-law, and niece- also through Etsy and another indie biz… and so on.

I’ve also made one of my Squidoo lenses donate all profit to the Grameen Foundation, which offers micro-loans to entrepreneurs in third world countries, and I’m switching several others to a 50% profit, 50% donation.

BTW- I wanted to stumble your last post, but there’s no link?

hey WordVixen – rule the world? reckon you could do a better job than the current bunch in charge so you got my vote…..anyhoo, you got some good charity going there – good karma to you too!
Stumble – erm – yikes – i’m still on free wordpress hosting – don’t know how to get that going?? seems like i need to edit the css which I can’t do on the free version…..but damn – thanks anyway!

sorry. i don’t even know if i make $1 a month on my blog. :( but here’s how i try to give back in my own small way.

i play the freerice game daily (each correct answer = 20 rice grains for the world food program). i use goodsearch (each search = about 1 cent for my charity, the freeplay foundation). i also posted banners for these, as well as kiva (microfinance) on my blog.

finally, i’m stumbling this post… stumbled. best of luck. :)

I’ve meant to comment here for a while about this idea. I feel really guilty that I’m not going to “openly” partake. The main reason being I don’t to come across as using charity as a method to promote my blog which I fear it might well do.

@Kouji – thanks for the stumble! Great idea with the freerice game – I’m taking part now as well!

@Clog Money – I know what you mean – getting traffic as a result of charity is a bit of a moral dilemma……I was in two minds about posting myself…but there you go.

Hey UDog! Love that you’re doing this…
and I think matching you would be great, but I will happily offer to double + $37 dollars in the name of SuiteJ ( http://suitej.com ) because that’s his favorite number.

I’m doubling (+$37) the “match” because you have really hit on something here- way to send out the message that it’s never a bad time to give back!

If you’ve already read my recent post, ( http://brilliantjeni.com/2008/10/09/brilliantjeni-is-officially-off-vacation ) you know that I recently felt the sting of the financial crisis. Is that, or the fact that I am at a high risk for a money-slap-repeat, going to keep me from donating? No way Jose!

I encourage all bloggers and web publishers to contribute and GIVE, no matter what is to come!

    PS I stumbled and Dugg.

@clogmoney I see absolutely nothing wrong with pushing traffic toward a genuine charitable cause. Your integrity shines through as always, but I definitely believe in promoting charitable efforts as much as possible, for the greater good.

Rather sad if a charity action wasn’t promoted simply because it was charity. lol

hey BrilliantJENI – nice one! Thank you. Good to get another blogger on board with the idea…..p.s. how many white russians did you get through in the end?

  11. October 17, 2008 at 16:28 | #11

Great Idea. I would like to signed up for this. Please let me know on how i can help.

Hey Salwa – no sign up required, just pick a charity and at the end of November, donate some money that you’ve earned online to the charity…..

  13. October 18, 2008 at 18:29 | #13

Looks like I’m in by default, but I’d be more than happy to if Jeni hadn’t volunteered on my behalf. :)

My daughter has a heart condition, and we give to the heart center whenever we can. They saved her life when she was only 3 days old, so the very, very least I can do is try to help others.

For example, on Cyan’s (my daughter) 1st birthday, we had everyone bring a donation instead of a gift.
It was a great feeling to bring all of that money down to our next cardiology check up. :)

    Anyway, great idea UnderDog! ;)

    Cheers!
    Jay

I think thats a really good idea that you’ve got there. I dont make much money online either atm, but if I do make some money this month (big if, lol) then I will try to donate it to a worthy cause – possibly breast cancer awareness seeing as its their month!

  15. October 19, 2008 at 13:13 | #15

I anonymously donate to a local cause in my home town every other month from what I make online. It is one of my personal goals to give back. I personally believe that giving is the fastest way to having. I donate financially as well as with my time. Im a plumber/home builder and have done loads of work for causes in my neighborhood.
Too bad more people arent doing things like this. Good one on you dude.!!!

@SuiteJ – nice one! Great idea to give donations instead of gifts for birthdays…..especially when they are so little….my daughter is only 6months old – I think I’m going to follow your example on her 1st birthday

@Dan – good for you man – breast cancer is a super worthy cause! I’ll raise a glass to you pulling in a hefty wad of cash this month!

@Shane – excellent dude – I love to hear good stuff like this – donating time in your own neighbourhood is fantastic – in our modern life we miss a lot of the community aspects of living so it’s great that you are putting something back in!
